RAVENSWOOD — A medical cannabis dispensary is coming to Ravenswood and projected to bring over 100 jobs to the area.
The Jackson County Development Authority announced Monday the purchase lease for Tariff Labs of Spencer founded by long-time residents David Heeter and Steve Bowers.
“The company’s investments in West Virginia and specifically Jackson and Roane counties will be ongoing as the market expands,” Heeter said in a press release.
The dispensary will be in the former Anixter building in the Jackson County Maritime and Industrial Park.
“This will be a significant investment for the partners as they anticipate investment for the partners as they anticipate investing upwards of $12 million initially and hiring over 100 employees as the market is established,” according to a press release from the development authority. “Tariff Labs has already made substantial investments in Roane County.”
In order to meet the specific need of cannabis cultivation, Mark Whitley with the development authority said officials with the Roane and Jackson County Development Authority looked for buildings in Roane County but weren’t able to find an available building to meet the need.
“Anixter’s lease was about to expire at the beginning of 2022. Whitley negotiated an early termination with Anixter allowing Tariff to meet time constraints for their operations,” the release said.
Partnered with Firelands Scientific of Huron, Ohio, Tariff Labs will open 10 retail dispensaries over the state. West Virginia patients will be able to purchase medical cannabis around the first quarter of 2022.
“The company is devoted to providing patients with the highest quality, natural sun grown medicine, while also being committed to giving back to their community,” the release said. “Tariff and Firelands Scientific came to us with an aggressive production plan with its goal of hiring and training local people.”
By offering more natural medicine as an alternative to opioids, company officials hope to improve the health and lives of West Virginians.
“The objective for the company is to provide a source of high-quality alternative medicine options for patients in West Virginia, including options for pain management that don’t involve opioid dependance, which has devastated the nation and particularly our region in West Virginia and Ohio,” Firelands Scientific CEO Jeff McCourt said. “The fact that we get to deploy our world-class operating model and bring good quality jobs and economic develop to the Jackson and Roane County region is all the more satisfying.”
