Marijuana, Village Park on agenda for Monday’s Sanford Council meeting

Sanford Village Council members will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7 at Jerome Township Hall, one week earlier than normal due to scheduling conflicts and Valentine’s Day.

The agenda includes discussing the status of possibly bringing marijuana to the village. But no vote will be held on that decision at this meeting.

“We’re going to discuss the steps on how to go forward to vote on it,” said Sanford Village Manager Dolores Porte.

Porte said the council must look at zoning and at the ordinance, noting there are steps before the board can even say “yes” or “no” to opting in to offering cannabis. The village would have to alter its zoning in order to include marijuana. The council would also have to address the village ordinance to decide under what conditions recreational cannabis could be available. Those things need to be studied to get to the voting stage, Porte explained.

At past council meetings or by contacting individual council members, many Sanford residents have encouraged the village to adopt offering cannabis. Several residents have cited it will increase revenue and help people who are suffering from different maladies.

Monday’s agenda also includes a vote on awarding the contract for the Village Park rebuild. The park was devastated during the May 2020 flooding. Sanford Village Manager Jake Cole has worked on helping get it put back in order. He said it offers recreation, family activities, and revenue for the village.

Porte is expected to present the status of the 2020 FEMA Hazard Mitigation Grant, which includes long-term solutions to reduce the impact of disasters in the future and promotes community vitality after a catastrophe.

There will also be council member reports on the Sanford Youth League, Sanford Lake Improvements, Midland County Parks and Recreation, Midland County Planning Commission, and Midland County Emergency Medical Advisory Board.
