Advocates for medical marijuana will be circulating petitions Saturday at more than 100 statewide events as they make a push to get the issue on the November ballot.
Crista Eggers is the statewide coordinator for Nebraskans For Medical Marijuana. Her seven year old son Colton suffers from uncontrolled seizures and tells KLIN News this petition effort cannot fail because far too many lives are depending on it.
“For far too long, patients in this state have been forced to suffer without having the option of medical cannabis as a treatment option. My family has chosen Nebraska as our home, and because of this my child continues to suffer horrific and life-threating seizures each and every day,” Eggers says. “Nebraska law prevents me from even talking with his doctor about medical cannabis. As a parent, shouldn’t I have the right to do everything in my power to help my son?”
Eggers says the clock is ticking as they try and collect 87-thousand verified signatures by July 7. She says there will be several locations in Lincoln to sign the petitions Saturday, March 19.
NMM is asking Nebraska voters to sign two statutory medical cannabis initiatives that work together to protect qualified patients from criminal penalties and regulate private businesses that provide medical cannabis. Patients are required to have a written recommendation from a licensed health care provider to qualify for the program.
