Participants learned more about the new rules and regulations and what steps they have to take to apply for and get a license to operate a medical cannabis business in Mississippi. “We will be talking to folks about the different kinds of medical establishments that will require licensing, what agencies will be overseeing that and what requirements those agencies have put in place,” said Clare Millette, with MSCTA.”They are going to have to check a lot of boxes to make sure they have a compliant application and then secure a license,” said attorney Slates Veazey. Kayla Davis was one of the more than 100 business people who attended the workshop. “I moved from Colorado to start a cannabis business, and I believe that it’s very lucrative for cities in our state,” Davis said. New cannabis businesses will have to shell out a lot of money just to get their operation up and running. A nonrefundable application fee will cost as much as $30,000 for the largest growers or cultivators.Business owners also learned about the enormous paperwork they’ll have to submit the state agencies that will regulate new industry.”You’re going to have to submit all of your information about who you are, about your entity, about your business partners, your SOP — those kind of things,” said Melvin Robinson, with MSCTA. “Those are things that people don’t really think about.”Business owners could face hurdles getting financing and insurance, because under federal law, marijuana is still classified as illegal.
