Ahmedabad: These seemingly innocuous treats gave a high till the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) got a whiff of a narco case it has never handled before and seized cannabis cookies from a restaurant in Bhat village of Gandhinagar.
The ATS swooped on the restaurant on Saturday night and recovered the cookies and 16 units of pure extracts of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the main ingredient of cannabis, and CBD (cannabidiol), a compound found in the cannabis plant.
ATS officers said the case is perhaps the first of its kind in the city and among the rare ones in India.
In June 2021, the Narcotics Control Bureau had busted a gang involved in selling weed or marijuana brownies in Malad in Mumbai.
As for Saturday’s case, the cops nabbed Jaykishan Thakor, 28, an arts graduate and the owner of the restaurant, Chicken Chulha, from where the narcotic substances weighing 294.5g worth Rs 41,000 were found. The cops also apprehended Thakor’s friend, Ankit Kulhari, 26, a BBA degree holder. Both are residents of Ahmedabad.
According to ATS officers, they got an input that Thakor and Kulhari had been selling the cannabis-infused cookies from their restaurant for several months.
“The duo got most of the cookies made in Himachal Pradesh. They sold them to their regular customers,” an ATS officer said. “They used to tell their customers that they had brought some new stuff from Himachal Pradesh. The prices of the cookies were between Rs 4,000 and Rs 20,000.”
During their preliminary questioning by the ATS officers, the duo said that the cannabis cookie operation was their first attempt at the narco business which had begun only recently. But ATS officers said all signs indicate that the two had been selling the cookies for at least four months at the restaurant which they had opened about four years ago.
Sources in police said that Thakor used to bring the cannabis cookies and cannabis oil from Himachal Pradesh. Kulhari used to deliver the products to their customers.“Rather than pouring butter in the dough for the cookies, the two put cannabis oil,” said a police officer. “The cookies looked normal and raised no suspicion.”
The two were handed over to the special operations group of Gandhinagar Police and a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered with Adalaj police.
