3 Reasons why I walked away from Powerlifting (Elitefts article)

Some of you understand I have walked away from powerlifting in 2020 and am no longer competing. I no longer want to push the …

  1. I never competed but took recreational powerlifting very seriously for like 15 years. Never missed a single workout, did all my accessory work, etc..

But I got to a point where I just didn't feel good. Even though I was "gym strong" my joints started talking to me around 35, I had shitty general fitness, etc.. So for almost 7 years I've mixed it up.

Now I use mostly DB's with minimal barbell work (except for deadlifts and OHP). I keep the reps in 5-12. I also focus a lot on bodyweight/weighted calisthenics as well as performance training/conditioning. Plus I walk 10-15K steps every day. Overall I feel and look way better. 💯

  2. Totally get your mentality. For a while I wanted to be super into resistance training and bulking up my body but at the end of the day I just care about being healthy and being pain free.

  3. Sure hear ya on the family thing. I noticed that I got really wrapped up on my last comp and neglected many things with the family. Really did not have a summer, which is pretty bad when you have a little one. Probably why I found your 10/20 life book so great was the emphasis on the off-season and ensuring that you take care of the ones around you. To answer the question "what would be the last straw for me?' Enjoyment would be the biggest thing. This could be for many reasons ie injury, health, or family pressure. I honestly look forward to making that decison. My first love, football was ended by sickness/NCAA eligibility. I have not had a chance to really just decide to move on without it being forced on me. As always enjoy the vids and sound advice.

  4. Much respect for you Brian! For me years of supplemental testosterone raised my blood count and I had a stroke. Luckily I have came back from paralysis. God Is good! Anyway took me out of powerlifting. I still lift and enjoy life.

  5. Wise move. Your accomplishments are world records, can’t ask for more than that in the lifting world. Just my opinion but at this point you’d best serve us a trainer, rehab expert, inspiration and PL guru. Keep up the good work please.
