Male NFA student freaks out after eating marijuana gummies, chokes teacher

NEWBURGH – A “physical interaction occurred” between a Newburgh Free Academy student and a teacher on Tuesday after the student “exhibited incoherent behavior and fell to the ground,” Superintendent Dr. Jackielyn Manning Campbell said.

She did not reveal if the student was a boy or girl or if the teacher was a man or woman; however, sources told Mid-Hudson News the student was male and the teacher was a woman.

The incident occurred after the student consumed an unknown amount of marijuana gummies on his way to school.

The superintendent said the teacher tried to assist the student when the “interaction” occurred. The source said the boy allegedly choked the teacher.

Both parties were transported to the hospital out of an abundance of caution, Manning Campbell said in a letter to the community.

She said in less than a minute after the incident began, school security, a safety deputy, and Newburgh City Police responded. City police declined to comment on the incident.

“Consumption of drugs and/or physical violence are never tolerated. Schools should be a physically and emotionally safe environment for all of our students, faculty, and staff to learn and education,” Manning Campbell said. “The student’s behavior will be investigated and reviewed. They will be held to the standard represented in the 2022-2023 District Code of Conduct,” she said.
