WHEATLAND TOWNSHIP — In addition to the national and statewide elections on the ballot in November, Wheatland Township residents will be asked to vote on whether or not they want to “opt in” to adult use marijuana sales and distribution.
Shall Wheatland Township adopt an ordinance allowing up to tow adult use marijuana retail establishments and up to two adult use marijuana grow establishments within Wheatland Township?
According to information on the Wheatland Township website, when the state of Michigan put legalizing recreational marijuana on the statewide ballot in 2018, 56% of Wheatland Township voters voted against the measure. At that time, the Wheatland Township board opted out of having any license for recreational marijuana in the township.
Recently, however, the board has been approached by a community member asking the board to reconsider the ordinance on recreational marijuana and to “opt in” allowing the establishment of a commercial grow facility.
In addition, others have come before the board to ask about the possibility of having a retail store to sell recreational marijuana products within the township, the website stated.
Township officials researched the issue and invited lawyers and consultants to address public meetings to help the community learn more about recreational marijuana, and the pros and cons of the issue, and the township board voted to place a proposal on the November ballot to give residents the opportunity to voice their opinion on the topic.
Currently, no townships in Mecosta County allow recreational marijuana licenses.
