They think they have identified the healing compound was in the plant. I have noticed that when I eat the real food I get more nutrition than I do from the supplemental pill. Used to take 1 pill, now it's 3
They did same for turmeric as well. It's pathetic how one uses loopholes, gets patent & hence rights. On the other side communities with traditional knowledge of nature remains "barbaric !"
I honestly don’t use natural remedies because it can cause overdoses easily. People think if you take more it works more. Not necessarily. Nature doesn’t mean over use can’t be harmful. I need a doctor to give an appropriate dosage for my body weight, gender, and height or I won’t use it. That said this biopiracy is wrong.
This made me realise Britain fundamentally has no identity or culture really beyond hunger for power, real estate/land/colony, and hierarchy ; it’s all a facade for no real identity. They have merely copy, adopt and monopolise others resources & culture, eg. tea, spices, pastry, paper, etc.
We really have to deal with the root of the problem which is exploitation of people and resources. The clock is ticking with our biodiversity collapsing entirely.

I think it's fair to say that you shouldn't be able to patent something nature has already invented, even if the indigenous people are also benefiting from this corrupt practice by sharing in the monopoly. Patenting an extraction process or formulation is understandable. An even better comparison to pre-modern history would be laws where there were certain types of animals that only the king could own, hunt, or eat.

In case of neem oil used as fungicide, patents are not the Great Evil. Just having a patent doesn't mean you can profit all over the world from it. If your company is set in the US and you want to sell your fungicide to be used in Germany, you ask for a patent in Germany. Doesn't mean people anywhere have to suddenly stop using neem oil as a fungicide everywhere in the world. Also, it depends on what exactly you write in a patent claim. Also, patents expire.
Very similar to how Chinese manufacturers learn processes and technologies through specifications and instructions given by outsourcing manufacturing. To tell someone how to make something that technological information has to be transferred otherwise it won’t be the right product. Of course that is why cheap Chinese junk never holds a candle to durable goods made in Germany Austria with the United States
