Brainerd High School student arrested for allegedly bringing loaded gun, marijuana on school’s campus

A student at Brainerd High School was arrested after allegedly bringing marijuana and a loaded gun to school Monday, according to a news release from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office.

A teacher allegedly smelled marijuana on the student and called an administrator.

An administrator and a school resource deputy searched the student and found 6.9 grams of marijuana in a potato chip bag and a loaded gun in the student’s blue jeans.

The student, charged with carrying a firearm on school grounds and simple possession of marijuana, was arrested and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center.

“The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is committed to maintaining a safe learning environment for our children and school staff,” said Sheriff Austin Garett in the news release. “Today’s arrest represents the importance of having a school resource deputy in our schools and the relationships they maintain with our school staff and administrators. It is through these relationships they foster, mentor and mitigate incidents like this, which threaten a safe and healthy learning environment.”
