New York City’s first legal cannabis dispensary opens today in Manhattan

New York City’s first legal cannabis dispensary will open in Noho today, and the shop is already expecting more than a thousand people who have made reservations to guarantee their spot in line.

It’s been years in the making for a recreational cannabis dispensary to be legally allowed to open in the city. While people are now allowed to buy it, it’s still illegal to resell any cannabis products without a license.

That’s something the city has been cracking down on recently in an effort to support the legal marijuana industry and give dispensaries a fair chance to succeed.

Today, the nonprofit Housing Works Cannabis Company will open their doors at 4:20 p.m. at their location at 750 Broadway in Manhattan. The staff recommends making a reservation ahead of time and bringing an ID.

Before heading to the dispensary, it’s important to be up to date on the state’s cannabis regulations.

Under the law, people are allowed to share cannabis with another adult who is 21 years or older. People cannot legally sell marijuana if they are not licensed to do so. While it may be legal in New York City, it is not allowed to take cannabis products across state lines.

Assemblyman Kenny Burgos says he will be one of the many people in line as New York makes history.
