I totally agree with you, if you need a paycheck then you should not start a business. Up front money is a must. I believe you need at least $100k after getting truck/trailer and business startup cost.
I have changed my strategy in this environment. I only run enough to pay.my bills and up keep. I decided not to pile up.miles on my truck. I look for a couple days and wait for the right ser up.

I'm doing just fine with a gas powered engine… it's paid for and not one drop of any kind of fluid leaking…
