E’town couple charged with giving marijuana to juvenile | Crime And Courts

An Elizabethtown couple was arrested Friday morning after reportedly giving marijuana and drug paraphernalia to an underage family member.

James Garten, 49, and Barbara Lewis, 32, face a number of charges, including second-degree unlawful transaction with a minor — a Class D felony punishable by one to five years in prison, if convicted.

Both were released from the Hardin County Detention Center Friday on $500 unsecured bonds.

According to an arrest citation from the Hardin County Sheriff’s Department, deputies were called out to their home Friday around 3:30 a.m. in response to a reported domestic incident. Upon arrival, deputies noticed a strong odor of marijuana and it was discovered that the couple had been smoking marijuana and drinking alcohol with children in the residence.

Deputies also later found that Garten and Lewis reportedly provided a 15-year-old girl a small bong, a grinder and two baggies of what appeared to be marijuana, according to the citation. She told deputies she has smoked marijuana with Lewis and that they regularly smoke with Garten multiple times a week.

According to the citation, deputies also found several cockroaches in the kitchen of the residence and Garten reportedly stated those living in the residence had been recently “fighting” bed bugs.

Lewis reportedly had bruising on her arm and told deputies that Garten had pushed her earlier in the day, the citation states.

Garten and Lewis also are charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, fourth-degree assault and four counts of endangering the welfare of a minor.

Lewis is expected to appear before Hardin District Court via video arraignment Dec. 17. Garten’s court date was not available.
