Traverse City Commission Discussing Regulations for Adult Use Marijuana

During the Traverse City Commission meeting on Monday, the Ad Hoc Committee on Adult-Use Marijuana licensing updated where currently stand with drafting a rubric to decide recreational marijuana licenses.

The committed drafted a map to ensure all recreational marijuana stores are not in the same area.

The shaded areas allow two licenses, besides purple and the brown regions, which will enable three licenses.

The green area allows one, and the yellow area is to be determined.

The committee also drafted a rubric to determine the ideal business for recreational marijuana sales.

If there are more applications than licenses, it is determined by statute, unlike medical marijuana licenses determined by lottery.

“The rubric is important to us to make sure we are giving everybody a fair shot. We don’t just want it to be businesses grandfathered in because there are people who would like to enter the industry who weren’t able to before,” said Amy Shamroe, Mayor Pro Tem, Traverse City Commission. “It also helps us create some separation from all who might apply.”

A decision on the final number of licenses or rubric for adult-use recreational marijuana sales isn’t expected until after the new year.
