Jamshedpur, March 4: In a breakthrough against rising narcotic drug menace in the city, Police on Friday arrested two men and seized over 10 kgs of marijuana from Sonari. Marijuana was recovered from two houses in Sonari.

Senior SP, M Tamil Vanan said that they had set up a special taskforce to drive against the sale of supply of narcotic drugs in the city.

“During the drive against the narcotic drugs, we got an input that marijuana is being sold from two houses at New Gwala Bustee. Based on the information, the taskforce raided the houses at the small hours today when the police found the stock of the marijuana, ” said Vanan while addressing a press conference on Friday.

He said in the raids that were carried out by deputy superintendent of police (Headquarters-Ii) Kamal Kishore.

“The culprits were arrested and the marijuana stocks were seized. During interrogation, they confessed that they used to get the stuff from a man known as Anil Singh at Baridih. Now we are trying to arrest Anil Singh, ” the senior SP said.

Following orders from DIG Kolhan the district police are working on a strategy to curb rising drug menace in the city and its outskirts.

Moreover, the erstwhile Seraikela-Kharsawan SP, Mohammed Arshi during his two-year tenure carried out effective operations against the drug-peddlers who would operate from the Adityapur Muslim Bustee. He did not only arrest several drug-peddlers, but also succeeded in nailing Dolly, the lady kingpin who had been evading arrest for a long time. Following strict action of the police, the drug-peddlers from the Adityapur Muslim Bustee have started selling brown sugar in the steel city’s localities like Azadnagar, Mango, and Parsudih. DIG reiterated that the steps are being taken to curb the menace.

A police officer spoke of a multi-pronged strategy, targeting both the demand and supply sides of the drug traffic. This would involve cultivating sources among the student community and tracing the drug trafficking networks, located mostly in the State. “There has been a drastic change in the pattern of consumption from natural psychotropic substances to chemical compounds as is evident from recent cases,” he noted.

With the rising alcohol and drug addiction among adolescents in the steel city being a major cause of concern, medical experts and counsellors have stressed the need for coming out of the denial mode and imbibing strong family values so that children do not fall prey to peer pressure.

Officials attribute the boom in the drug culture to the pumping in of money from the Gulf countries as well as to the boom in the realty sector.
