A witness called a police dispatcher at about 1 a.m. on April 1 to report a reckless driver near Elder Drive and Maplehurst Road.
The caller said someone driving a red Mazda truck a deer and then continued driving. An officer spotted a red Mazda with front-end damage driving southbound on Maplehurst and then pulling into a driveway.
As the officer approached the car, he could smell marijuana, according to a police report. The driver also was difficult to understand, and his eyes were bloodshot and glassy, according to the report.
When asked where he was coming from, the man said he was driving for Uber. A check of his cell phone on his dash showed a tab running on the Uber app for $82 although no one else was in his vehicle.
The man had difficulty performing field sobriety tests and was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Officers saw beer bottles in the car and began searching the vehicle. They recovered 14.9 grams of suspected marijuana, two grinders containing small amounts of suspected marijuana, three pipes with suspected marijuana residue, one small nearly empty bottle of Blanco 1800 tequila, an unopened bottle of Fireball whiskey, a 24-ounce can of Icehouse beer, and eight Michelob Ultra beer bottles (six empty and two unopened).
Police administered a breath alcohol test and the suspect registered a breath alcohol concentration of 0.079g/210L, according to a police report.
Theft: Brookpark Road
North Olmsted police officers at 3:50 p.m. on March 19 responded to Walmart regarding two women who were being held for suspicion of shoplifting.
After police spoke with store security and the women involved, officers decided to only charge one of the women and to release the second woman without charges. The woman who was charged was accused of going through a self-checkout register and failing to scan all the items. The woman denied her friend knew what she was doing, according to a police report.
The woman arrested had a permit to carry a concealed weapon and had a 9 mm handgun in her purse at the time of her arrest. However, she immediately advised officers of the handgun.
Police charged the one woman with misdemeanor theft.
Theft: Brookpark Road
A Walmart asset protection associate called police at 6:56 p.m. on March 20 to report the store had a man in custody suspected of shoplifting.
The store employee said the suspect entered the store with an empty shopping bag and proceeded to the dog food aisle. He placed a bag of dog food into the shopping bag and then proceeded to the customer service desk, produced a receipt from a previous purchase, and returned the dog food for a refund, according to a police report.
When the man left the store, he was stopped by security. While detained in an office, the suspect was observed on security cameras removing numerous items from his clothing and attempting to conceal them, according to the police report. The items recovered included a scented candle, three USB drives, and miscellaneous electronic cords. The total value of the items involved, including the dog food, was $105.14.
The man was charged with theft and possession of criminal tools, both of which are misdemeanors.
Theft: Brookpark Road
Police at 2:53 p.m. on March 25 arrested a woman for petty theft after Walmart security accused the woman of failing to pay for seven items while going through a self-checkout register. The value of the items was $41, according to a police report.
The suspect was charged with misdemeanor theft. Four other women were with the suspect at the time, but they were not charged.
