Mumbai The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has busted an inter-state drug trafficking racket and arrested two of its members with high-grade 286 kg of marijuana, estimated to be worth around ₹3.5 crore.
To bust the racket successfully, a NCB team strategically kept an eye on the vehicle carrying the contraband material for over 100km on the Solapur-Mumbai highway. The vehicle, headed to Mumbai, was used to supply drugs to nearly 20 groups in the city, claimed NCB officials.
According to NCB sources, their intelligence network obtained specific information about a vehicle which was used to transport a sizable quantity of marijuana sourced from Andhra Pradesh/Telangana and laid traps at strategic locations on Solapur-Mumbai highway for two days.
On Sunday night, the NCB sleuths spotted a suspicious vehicle matching the description mentioned in the input and intercepted it. Upon examination, the officials found 95 packets of marijuana covered with brown adhesive tapes concealed in the car. A total of 286 kg of the contraband material was found in the packets after which both the occupants of the vehicle were arrested.
“We kept an eye on the vehicle for nearly 100km, while making sure that they don’t get a wind of the fact that they are being chased. This racket is a seasoned one. They would often change the number plates of the vehicle to dodge the police,” said Amit Ghawate, Zonal Director, NCB Mumbai.
“This syndicate used to procure high grade marijuana in bulk directly from sources in Andhra/Telangana and supply it to at least 20 different drug peddling groups in Mumbai. The groups in turn used to sell it to consumers,” said Ghavate.
“This high grade cannabis is in demand and with this operation, the NCB has managed to successfully cut off the supply,” he added.
